In this eighth chapter of the DVD "Recoveries" featuring 18 short films on illness, care and the caregiver-patient relationship, David Le Breton, anthropologist, is interested in transplantation medicine, which he describes as a "medicine of identity", in particular as far as the experience of the recipient and the donor are concerned.
Le Breton recalls the problems of organ transplantation: the disruption of the patient's sense of identity, the induction of fantasies about the personality, religion and sex of the donor and the feeling of debt for a donation received without the possibility of reciprocity. He then elaborates on the reluctance around making an organ donation.
