If you wish to submit your images, it's here!

The collection managed by CNRS Images is also enriched by your images (photos, films, video sequences).

Once deposited with CNRS Images, your images will be managed in a database accessible on the Internet, enriched with metadata, saved and archived, giving them greater visibility. They will also be distributed internally and externally. For more information on the possible uses of your images, see the ‘How will my images be used by CNRS Images?' section.

Conditions of submission

  • Images produced as part of research carried out in a laboratory under the supervision or co-supervision of the CNRS

  • Authors (at least one of the co-authors of each image) listed in the CNRS directory (Reseda)

Selection criteria

We reserve the right to select images from among those submitted. We take into account technical aspects (file quality and size), aesthetic aspects (visual quality, legibility, diversity of framing) and legal aspects (personal image rights, non-exclusivity, etc.).

How do I submit my images?

Provide files of the best possible quality

  • Photos: ideally, provide the original file or at least 1,200 pixels wide, uncompressed Tiff or Jpeg format

  • Videos: MPGE4 format (if possible H264, 1920*1080, 16/9 25fps) or .mov. If several video sequences are submitted, we can make one end-to-end sequence that we will validate with you.

You can use any type of file deposit service (filesender, mycore, wetransfer, etc.).

Provide your laboratory's agreement

Provide the director's approval by e-mail. The images will be attached to the unit's gallery (e.g. https://images.cnrs.fr/laboratoire/umr5553) if one exists.

Provide the agreement of the author(s)

  • If you are the author: confirm that you have not already transferred your rights to a journal or institution.

  • If you are not the author / if you have co-authors: each author must send CNRS Images an e-mail indicating that he/she still holds the rights to this image and that he/she accepts the submission and use of the image by CNRS Images under the conditions described on this page.

Provide the consent of the persons depicted

If your images depict recognisable people, we will provide you with an image rights transfer form for them to sign.

Confirm that the following credits/copyrights are acceptable to you

  • Photos: © Author(s) / acronyms of their laboratory(ies) / CNRS Images

  • Videos: © Acronyms of the laboratory(ies) / CNRS - Year

You may also choose to place your images under a Creative Commons licence (please specify which licence you have chosen).

Provide the name(s) of the scientist(s) responsible for the research.

Provide a brief description of the images submitted

  • The subject of each photo or video sequence (what is represented)

  • The type of images (e.g. microscopy images with magnification, modelling, etc.)

  • The research related to this image (or a link to the project presentation page)

  • The name of the research programme, if relevant

Information on the subject of the images and the context of the research concerned must be given in French.

Once the deposit has been accepted, we may ask you for more information about the images selected.

How will CNRS Images use my images?

Photographs

Images can be viewed by anyone on this site, with an accompanying notice (detailed caption, name of laboratory, author). For your part, you can continue to use them; it changes nothing for you.

Our users can order them from the site, but we moderate the uses. We authorise the reproduction and distribution of photographs in the following cases:

  • Free of charge to promote research, the work of scientists, laboratories and, more generally, the CNRS.

  • More rarely, on a paying basis for wider use. The income we receive enables us to cover part of the costs of managing and developing the online site via our external service provider.

Examples of use:

  • Internal (CNRS) media produced by the CNRS Communications Department (institutional site, brochures, leaflets, activity report, institutional exhibition, CNRS Le Journal / CNRS news websites, CNRS Le Journal paper journal, Carnets de Science magazine, etc.); the communications departments of the CNRS institutes and delegations in the regions; the institutional communications of laboratories, etc.

  • External media produced by universities and research partners, students or teachers, scientific cultural centres, museums, publishers, the press, etc.

In all cases, users must mention the source of the images (© author / laboratory / CNRS Images). Given the large volume of image requests we receive, we cannot systematically inform you of each use. However, in the event of use for major events (institutional exhibition, multi-media communication for an emblematic event, etc.), we will inform you.

CNRS Images,

Our work is guided by the way scientists question the world around them and we translate their research into images to help people to understand the world better and to awaken their curiosity and wonderment.
