Simple life forms have probably appeared elsewhere in the universe. On Earth we know of bacteria capable of withstanding colossal temperatures, pressures and radiation. Life thus seems capable of adapting to the most hostile environments. But one ingredient remains essential to the survival of possible extraterrestrial microorganisms, liquid water.
