Faisceaux de cordelettes rouges et vertes non torsadées (à gauche) et torsadées (à droite). Un fil textile de coton ou de laine ne doit sa solidité qu'à la torsion des fibres. Lorsque la torsion est suffisante, il est impossible de séparer les cordelettes sans les rompre. Des expériences sur des fils modèles sont menées pour comprendre comment la torsion empêche le glissement des fibres.
