Ulves, aussi appelées "laitues de mer". L’ulvane est le principal composant des ulves, responsable des marées vertes. Des chercheurs de la station biologique de Roscoff et leurs collègues allemands et autrichiens, ont identifié une bactérie marine dont le système enzymatique permet de décomposer l’ulvane en source d’énergie ou en molécules d’intérêt pour l’agro-alimentaire ou les cosmétiques.
