Les lianes sont encore assez peu étudiées alors qu'elles constituent un élément important de la forêt tropicale, notamment en assurant un haubanage des arbres géants de la forêt. Contrairement à ce que l'on pourrait croire, elles ne pendent pas des arbres mais croissent à partir du sol.
