Schéma de la circulation océanique mondiale. En rouge, les grands courants chauds de surface, en bleu les grands courants profonds, plus froids. Quand des eaux chaudes en surface arrivent dans l'Atlantique nord, elles sont fortement refroidies : elles deviennent donc plus denses, ce qui les fait plonger vers les profondeurs.
