Pyrene, a humanoid robot, provided with a complex structure equipped with 32 electric motors. Its specifications were drawn up by LAAS roboticists and it was manufactured by PAL Robotics. Pyrene is designed to carry heavy loads, climb up or down stairs, adapt to unstable floors and use tools to perform complex activities. Excellent perception of its environment and high computing power should enable it to respond rapidly to an unforeseen event. Its inertial reference system enables it to retain its balance, like the inner ear in humans. Its depth-sensing camera enables it to see obstacles in order to go around them cleanly. With its highly robust grippers, it can carry an object weighing 6 kg without damaging it. Thanks to Pyrene, researchers are studying the principles that govern human movement in order to design practical applications such as prostheses. Pyrene could also perform tasks that are dangerous or challenging for human beings, for example in industrial environments.
