Mesure des flux de CO2 à l'interface air-substrat dur afin de connaître la production primaire (production de matière organique végétale, issue de la photosynthèse, par des organismes autotrophes, dits producteurs primaires) et comprendre le fonctionnement des écosystèmes rocheux. La mesure du flux de carbone permet d'évaluer la production primaire, et donc la fertilité d'une zone océanique ou côtière.
