Fragment de maxillaire appartenant au plus vieil aïeul de l'éléphant, le Phosphatherium escuilliei. D'un âge situé entre 53 et 59 millions d'années, ce fragment est issu des carrières à phosphates du bassin marocain des Ouled Abdoun. De telles recherches de terrain jettent de nouvelles lumières sur l'origine du peuplement moderne des mammifères en Afrique.(Réf : Journal du CNRS n° 85/86 Janvier/Février 97).
