Deeptech, au coeur des innovations de rupture

With a research background, what makes you decide to become an entrepreneur? How do research-based innovations reach the market? What are the challenges for researcher-entrepreneurs?

Deeptech, au coeur des innovations de rupture
Produced in collaboration with Maddyness, this five-part series highlights the technology transfers achieved by CNRS Innovation through start-ups resulting from fundamental research, also known as deep tech start-ups.

The CNRS Innovation RISE programme supports researchers when creating a company. Through this programme CNRS researchers can benefit from the valuable assistance of managers and specialists in deep tech start-ups such as TechnoFounders. This start-up studio specialising in deep tech provides additional support to the CNRS through technical teams and researchers with expertise related to the commercial launch of technological innovations.

The fifth episode is dedicated to the European financial support helping the development of deep tech start-ups which will potentially overcome technological barriers. As an example, the start-up Chiral Track, which specialises in the analysis of pharmaceutical molecules to improve our understanding of their health benefits. For their co-founder, Antoine Comby, the support of Europe has been a real boost for the development of their product. Director of the…

The third episode looks at the gender issue in deep tech start-ups. While research-based start-ups are multiplying and becoming increasingly important in the French economic landscape, the percentage of women at the head of these companies remains very low. Today, less than 2% of robotics start-ups and less than 3% of AI start-ups are founded by women. While parity is higher at the research stage, with many young women researchers, the gap increases when you get to positions of authority. How…

The second episode looks at the importance of the team and the allocation of roles in deep tech start-ups, where the technology/research and business aspects are closely linked. Finding a good product position and providing business development experience allows researchers to focus on their scientific expertise. How is the collaboration established between a researcher, a manager and/or a business developer? How do these separate areas come together to benefit the project? …

In the first episode, the two researcher-entrepreneurs we interviewed compare the challenges of research and entrepreneurship. While research seeks to provide an answer to a physical or mathematical problem, entrepreneurship provides solutions to real-world needs. Faced with the risks and various unknowns that entrepreneurship involves, Gaël Matten and Théau Peronnin emphasise their ambition to bring a new and revolutionary project to the daily lives of people. They are accompanied by the RISE…
