Le "mur de l'oeil" vu depuis "l'oeil" du cyclone tropical Katrina. L'avion NOAA P3 vole à environ 2 500 m d'altitude dans l'air calme de la partie centrale du cyclone, où des nuages bas couvrent la surface océanique. Le diamètre de l'oeil du cyclone est de 50 km environ. L'avion se dirige vers le "mur de l'oeil", un anneau compact de cumulonimbus dont le sommet atteint ou dépasse 15 km d'altitude. Vue prise le 28 août 2005, au maximum de l'intensité du cyclone tropical Katrina, la veille de son arrivée sur La Nouvelle-Orléans.
