À Ouro Preto, dans le Minas Gerais (Brésil), les chercheurs d'or qui ont découvert des gisements d'or alluvial au XVIIIe siècle, ont rivalisé d'ostentation dans la construction des églises baroques de leur confrérie et de leur quartier. Cette richesse est aujourd'hui la base d'un tourisme culturel qui fait vivre la ville après l'épuisement des gisements.
