"Physarum polycephalum", communément appelés blob, explorant son environnement en quête de nourriture dans une boîte de Petri. Le blob se déplace en étendant ses pseudopodes et en contractant son réseau veineux. Sensible à la lumière, il se développe en milieu humide et se nourrit de bactéries et de champignons dans la nature ou de flocons d’avoine en laboratoire. Il peut doubler de taille chaque jour. Bien que dépourvu de cerveau, il est capable d’apprendre de ses expériences et de transmettre les informations apprises à d’autres individus en fusionnant avec eux, prouvant que l’apprentissage ne dépend pas forcément du système nerveux. Ici, le blob a été coloré pour pouvoir observer cette fusion avec un autre individu.
