A cattle race organized on the rice-paddies at the end of the agricultural year is a common practice in the countryside of southern India. Here it is viewed as a mirror of developments in the agricultural life of Kerala. Now a cultural activity supported by farmers who join together for the "Club Race of India," these races seem to be the symbol of a new unity, that of the district of Palakkad and of the farmers of Kerala's "rice bowl."
