Ce trajectographe se situe au cœur de l'expérience Atlas. C'est un détecteur servant à mesurer la trajectoire des particules issues des collisions de protons. Il est le digne successeur des chambres à bulles, des chambres à fils ou des strips. Le CPPM (Centre de physique des particules de Marseille) a contribué à la conception, la construction et l'installation de ce détecteur.
