Boîte de Petri contenant des racines de carotte colonisées par le champignon symbiotique "Rhizophagus irregularis". L’intérieur de la boîte est maintenu stérile. N’ayant pas de parties aériennes, les racines se nourrissent grâce à du sucre dissous dans le milieu. Le scientifique observe la boîte pour vérifier la présence de contaminations.
