Study of the rotation rate of a vortex created by heat convection at the surface of a half-bubble of soap. In a light box, the researchers film the vortices on the surface of the bubble. The bubble is also subjected to a rotation similar to that of the Earth. The vortex created is an ideal model for the study of natural vortices such as cyclones in the Earth's atmosphere. By studying the trajectory and the intensity of the vortices on the surface of the bubble, a team of French researchers has discovered a universal and simple model for predicting cyclone intensity.
