Margaret Buckingham, a developmental biologist and CNRS 2013 Gold Medal laureate, in her laboratory. Of Scottish descent, Buckingham graduated from Oxford University (UK) before obtaining a PhD in biology in 1971. After completing her postdoc at the Institut Pasteur, where she set up her own lab, she joined CNRS in 1975. Between 1987 and 2010, she was head of the "Molecular Genetics of Development" laboratory at the Institut Pasteur. Buckingham is a prominent figure in developmental biology research in the field of muscle and heart formation. More recently, her work also led to important advances in muscle stem cell research and cardiogenesis.
