Roche (chert) composée essentiellement de silice, contenant des traces de matière organique datant de 3,5 milliards d'années, provenant du site de "Barberton Greenstone Belt" en Afrique du sud. Les roches les plus anciennes sur Terre (archéennes) ayant conservé des traces de matière organique sont siliceuses (cherts). L'étude de cette matière organique permet de déterminer si elle est d'origine biologique ou non et donc de dater l'apparition de la vie sur Terre.
