The Prosuli Project in the Okavango Delta
Prosuli supports the long-term sustainable management of transfrontier conservation areas (TFCAs) in Southern Africa through a participatory multi-stakeholder process.
Historically, protected areas such as the Kavango-Zambezi Transboundary Conservation Area (TFCA), to which the Okavango Delta belongs, have prioritised conservation objectives over the socio-economic development of the people who live there and suffer the disadvantages. The Prosuli (Promoting Sustainable Livelihoods) project is working with the inhabitants of the TFCA to develop solutions to facilitate cohabitation with wild animals and to promote the socio-economic development of communities while respecting biodiversity, by relying on local stakeholders. By changing the role and attitude of communities in the collective management of TFCAs, Prosuli promotes long-term sustainable management of these protected areas.
