Purification par plasma, de silicium pour le photovoltaïque. Un creuset froid inductif, rempli de grains de silicium, est placé sous une torche à plasma thermique qui en assure la fusion initiale. Un apport de grains par le centre du plasma permet de compléter le niveau de métal liquide. Le projet de recherche ARTIST(2000) a permis de mettre au point un procédé d'obtention de silicium à bas coût et faible impact environnemental, en voie d'industrialisation en 2012.
