Sonde de polarité, initialement en milieu polaire, après ajout d'une quantité importante de solvant apolaire "liophile" (gras) visant à mimer un gradient de polarité. Le milieu devient totalement apolaire et la luminescence du composé a viré au bleu. La sonde permet, avec un seul colorant, d'imager les variations de polarité en milieu cellulaire, traduites en gradient de couleurs de luminescence dans l'ensemble du spectre visible.
