Les scientifiques font ingérer un marqueur fluorescent, la calcéine, aux pétoncles polaires, afin de déterminer la vitesse de croissance de ces animaux. Expérience réalisée au large de la base Dumont d'Urville, Terre Adélie, Antarctique, dans le cadre du programme MACARBI (Monitoring environnemental en Antarctique basé sur l'étude des structures CARbonatées de BIvalves), qui tente de faire du pétoncle austral un témoin environnemental.
