For amputees, controlling a robotic prosthesis is far from a perfect solution. It can take months of training before they can perform basic day-to-day operations. In France, a team of researchers, engineers and medical doctors are developing a more natural method for controlling such a prosthesis using a phenomenon known as phantom limb sensation.

A l'Institut des Systèmes Intelligents et de Robotique (ISIR), Vincent Hayward et Séréna Bochereau font une expérience d'illusion haptique. Dans ce laboratoire, de nombreux dispositifs permettent de découpler les sources d'informations liées au toucher puis de les remettre ensemble pour simuler la perception tactile.

In the ISIR laboratory (Institute for Intelligent Systems and Robotics), a team composed of mechanical engineers, roboticists, computer scientists and electronics engineers takes care of a robotics assembly line and works in particular on bio-inspired robotics.

In the new ISIR laboratory, mechanical engineers, robotic engineers and electronic engineers manage a robotic assembly line and work especially on bio-inspired robotic. They develop more autonomic robots by taking inspiration from nature and animal behaviour. This film shows the work on an artificial rat.
