BGS research focuses on the mechanisms of global change and the impacts on environments and biodiversity. BGS research teams study evolutionary ecology, environmental science, sedimentology, palaeontology and climatology. They draw on a wide range of organisms and environments, both present and fossil.

The scientists try to gain a better understanding of the hydrological, biogeochemical and ecological mechanisms that control the sources, production and transfer of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in peatlands.
