Viollet-le-Duc, line for line
On the occasion of the bicentenary of the birth of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, these two films highlight two of the architect's most ambitious restoration projects, the city of Carcassonne and the Pierrefonds Castle:
- The City of Carcassonne (10 min.): Olivier Poisson, general heritage curator, explains the value and importance of this colossal renovation project, which bears witness to the way Viollet-le-Duc viewed restoration.
- Pierrefonds Castle (9 min.): When the architect undertook its restoration in 1857, the fortress was in a state of ruin. Guided both by his imagination and his knowledge of military architecture, Eugène Viollet-le-Duc was to rebuild an idealized castle, offering a panorama of the history of French military architecture. The historian Jean-Paul Midant shows us the different restored parts of the fortress and reveals the architect's objectives.
As a bonus, a third film shows the work of the MAP laboratory (Models and simulations for architecture and heritage) whose teams worked on 3D models of elements from these two sites.
