Virgo experimentation in Cascina
Virgo is a gravitational waves detector located in Cascina, near Pise in Italy.
These waves are tiny distortions of the space-time which spread in the universe at the speed of light. It is produced by violent phenomena like the collision between two black holes. The Virgo experience site is shown here. It includes two perpendicular arms of three kilometers long. Advanced Virgo is actually taking the reins. It should multiply by four the sensibility of Virgo to explore a volume of Universe thousand times more important.
CNRS Images,
