En réalisant deux spectrométries ultraviolette (UV) et infrarouge (IR) simultanément in situ (les sondes sont plongées directement dans le milieu réactionnel), on peut suivre la réaction de polymérisation. Concrètement, on suit la disparition du monomère qui se polymérise et la concentration de l'espèce réactive (un ion) qui "prépare" le monomère à la polymérisation.
