La partie blanche du "labelle" évoque un fruit charnu brillant, comme beaucoup d'arbustes bas en possèdent dans les lisières des forêts sub-antarctiques. Les oiseaux récupèrent alors le pollen sur les plumes du front et assurent la fécondation sur une autre fleur.
