I2TEM more than a microscope

Alain Claverie evokes the history of the CEMES (Centre d'Elaboration de Matériaux et d'Etudes Structurales, France) created in the late 50's under the name of LOE (Laboratoire d'optique éléctronique). During the years 2000, it became known the world over owing to its 3 research areas : materials, nanomaterials and nanosciences.
On June 18th, the laboratory officially opened the I2TEM (In Situ Interferometry Transmission Electron Microscope) : a transmission electron microscope with a unique design in the world.
Florence Houdelier and Etienne Snoeck explain both its functionning and its specificity that allow the electron interferometry and the observation of samples under thermal, mechanical or magnetic pressure.
