Les fortifications antiques orientales de la colline de Tchingiz Tepe, vue vers le nord. Sur le site de Termez (Ouzbékistan) des chercheurs ont exhumé une cité qui fut d'abord colonie militaire grecque au IIIe siècle avant notre ère, puis une des capitales de l'empire kouchan au Ier siècle ; elle est ensuite prise à l'automne 1220 par l'armée de Gengis Khan.
