The consequences of thawing permafrost in Central Yakutia, Eastern Siberia
As part of the PRISMARCTYC project, scientists are studying and comparing the state of permafrost (perpetually frozen ground where rocks and sediments are agglomerated by ice) at various stages of degradation in different climates and environments.
Its thawing amplifies climate change and threatens the way of life of local communities. Studying its influence on soils, water flows and the carbon cycle helps to understand the permafrost-climate feedback.
CNRS Images,
Our work is guided by the way scientists question the world around them and we translate their research into images to help people to understand the world better and to awaken their curiosity and wonderment.
