Samoa SPT project
The Pacific islands are particularly affected by tsunamis and tropical cyclones, which are becoming increasingly frequent.
The backwash from these natural disasters causes a surge of water that carries terrestrial sediments to the sea and deposits them in shallow areas. Analysis of these deposits is crucial to understanding and reducing the risks associated with these natural disasters. The Samoa SPT project is attempting to identify these deposits in the shallow marine areas around Tutuila Island. Their aim is to use them as sedimentary markers of tsunamis and tropical cyclones to build a chronology of past disasters in the South Pacific.
