Presentation by Jean-Pierre Serre at a conference on the history of 20th-century mathematics, held on January 6,7, and 8 1996 at the Faculté des Sciences in Nice. The overview summarizes the history of Galois cohomology from the early work of Schur and Brauer up through that of Chatelet, Weil, Tate, Springer, Steinberg, etc.
