Résumé

This film was made in conjunction with the celebration of the World Year of Physics in 2005. By presenting various slide sports, scientists explain the physical phenomena these sports depend on.
Slide, or glisse (the term invented by Jean-Claude Killy in the 1950s), is a social phenomenon and a way of life built around sports including skiing, roller-skating, surfing, and sailing. Scientists and technicians do everything they can to improve techniques of sliding or rolling, to make it possible to go ever faster. The science of tribology studies the phenomena produced when two entities are in contact, in movement relative to each other. The resulting problems are different for each sport.

CNRS Images,

Our work is guided by the way scientists question the world around them and we translate their research into images to help people to understand the world better and to awaken their curiosity and wonderment.
