A unique sanctuary will safeguard glaciers ice cores for centuries. Stored naturally at -52°C/-61°F, these frozen archives from endangered glaciers will preserve our planet’s climate memory for generations to come.
From the Alps to the Antarctic Plateau, two precious ice cores carrying the memory of Earth’s past atmosphere are now safely stored at Concordia station in an ice cave designed to preserve mountain ice for future generations of scientists. The conditioning of the ice cores will ensure that the samples are protected from environmental fluctuations and contamination.
“We are the last generation who can act,” said Anne-Catherine Ohlmann, Director of the Ice Memory Foundation, “It’s a responsibility we all share. Saving these ice archives is not only a scientific responsibility—it is a legacy for humanity.”
Discover here the missions carried out by the Ice Memory Foundation in the Alps at the foot of Mont Blanc (col de Dôme 2016) and in Bolivia (Illimani 2017).
Our work is guided by the way scientists question the world around them and we translate their research into images to help people to understand the world better and to awaken their curiosity and wonderment.
