Installing the LST-2 telescope on La Palma
At the top of La Palma in the Canary Islands, scientists are installing the second Large-Sized Telescope (LST-2) of the Cherenkov Telescope Array. A spectacular milestone in this international project dedicated to observing gamma rays from the most extreme cosmic events.
At the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory in the Canary Islands, the camera support arch of the LST-2 is lifted by crane and mounted onto its base. This delicate operation, prepared through specific high-altitude training, marks a key step for the CTAO Collaboration, which coordinates the construction of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory. The network will detect low-energy gamma rays, revealing traces of violent phenomena such as dying stars, supermassive black holes and active galactic nuclei across cosmological distances.
