Construction of an experimental Chalcolithic pottery kiln based on Mesopotamian examples
The scientists are seeking to reproduce the conditions of construction and use of a ‘connected’ potter's kiln based on Mesopotamian examples from the late Chalcolithic period, around 4500-3200 BC.
Its complex structure required unprecedented coordination on the part of the potters to build the two chambers simultaneously, and then to manage the firing cycle. The application of techniques likely to have been used at the time is based on sensory reproduction, using temporal, acoustic, tactile, auditory and visual criteria, without modern measuring tools. This provides new clues about the social organisation of craftsmen in the face of the physical and technical constraints of materials.
