Varan du Nil, "Varanus niloticus" (Lacertiliens), habite les rives des cours d'eau qui sillonnent la forêt gabonaise. On peut, parfois le rencontrer sur les pistes éloignées de toute surface aquatique. il peut atteindre 1,80 mètre de long, queue comprise. Il est carnassier, mais c'est aussi un grand consommateur de mollusques (escargots).
